My Heart Beats Faster

A bee wakes me as it buzzes at my bedroom window,

it makes my heart beat faster.

An engine backfires in the shopping center car park,

it makes my heart beat faster.

A car door slams in the quiet of the night,

it makes my heart beat faster.

I find myself surrounded in a crowded shop,

it makes my heart beat faster.

You see for that split second, I’ve no control,

all are things that you would pay no heed.

But my subconscious takes over, just for that moment

and the instinct for survival makes my heart beat faster.

The bee sounds like a call to prayer from a distant minaret,

travelling on the still wind of the dusty desert plains

and my heart beats faster.

The backfire makes the boy racers laugh,

but all my mind hears is small arms fire

and my heart beats faster.

No-one else even stirs as the door slams shut,

but I’m wrenched awake by the sound of incoming mortars

and my heart beats faster.

The shoppers jostle for the bargains,

high shelves are bursting with goods,

But I can see nowhere to hide, my escape route is blocked,

one well placed bomb would kill us all ...

My mind screams and my hearts beats faster.
