Mother and Son

A young solider wants to get his mother something

to remember him by.

He thinks, in his youthful mind,

That she will forget her young man when he goes to war.

So he takes a coin - all he has

and asks for it to be engraved with ‘mum’

A warm word on cold metal

A hole is drilled so she can wear it as a necklace.

And so, that coin, used to purchase many things

Over the years, has never been so priceless, has never served such an important purpose,

Than when it was presented to a mother .

She smiles through her tears,

Thinking that in his time of fear,

His only thoughts were of her, wanting to give her comfort.

And she wore the coin, its copper gleam

Guiding her through many a dark night.

It served as a reminder and then as a memorial

To her brave, kind young boy.
